Inis Meáin (translates as “Middle Island”) between Inis Mór and Inis Oírr
Size: 4km by 2.5km; Population: 200 approx

Inis Meain is the middle island, and the least visited of the three islands. It has its own quiet beauty where visitors can appreciate the unspoiled tranquillity and escape from the stresses and noise of modern living. Attractions that can be found here include- Stone Forts (Dún Chonchúir and Dún Fearbhaí), Inis Meáin Knitwear factory, Eaglais Naomh Muire gan Smál, Leaba Dhiarmaid agus Ghráinne, also the cottage where the famous playwright John M. Synge lived every summer from 1898 to 1902.

Historical Sites

Stone Forts – Dun Fearbhai and Dun Chonchuir, the latter is the best example of a circular fort on all three of the islands.

Churches – Mary Immaculate Church and Cill Cheannainn. Mary Immaculate Church has beautiful stained-glass windows by the famous Harry Clarke Studios. The alter was built by James Pearse, father of the Irish patriot Padraic Pearse. CillCheannain, according to legend, Cheannain was the mother of the ‘seven sons of the king’, which is the name of another church nearby.
